For some reason a private yoga class can seem even more intimidating than a group class but after our session with Corey Loftus, let us tell you – it’s not. Corey puts you right at ease as you feel his breath fall into the same rhythm as yours – a challenge for us single-minded New Yorkers.

We asked for vigorous, which seemed like a tall order in our living room, but vigorous is exactly what we got. The bonus of working privately with a knowledgeable yoga teacher is that you are properly aligned in every pose, from plank to savasana. Corey’s knowledge and guided adjustments helped us get deep into the poses and we forgot that we were at home, dustbunnies under the couch and laundry to do in the closet.

Part hatha, vinyasa and a little ashtanga our class ended by us being ‘flown’. The theory is that this form of Acro Yoga can be therapeutic as it allows the student to release, let gravity take over and really lengthen the muscles. It was a first, so we were slightly more awkward and tight than those more seasoned but under Corey’s guidance, it didn’t take long to let go.

In addition to private sessions, Corey also teaches at popular studios around the city, including House of Jai and Om Factory. See his class schedule here.
