It's not easy to walk the line of being deeply meditative while playful and laid back. Somehow, Billy Gill does it with ease in his Open Vinyasa classes at Urth Yoga. Starting with a longer, deeper meditation and pranayama practice than you'll find in many of your local classes, Billy immediately gets the focus on the breath (but in the middle of an intense round of Kapalabhati breathing, he'll toss a box of keenex around the room and say: "Don't be shy – this one can get the snot going. Preserve your sleeves"). When you're good and centered, things will move into a flow sequence of the core poses. Note: Billy will have you holding your asanas long enough to realize exactly how winded you can get in Warrior I. The entire class is focused on using long holds and intentional breathing as a vehicle to get deeper into your poses and your meditation. But right when you've come to the point circa 60 minutes in that downdog is absolutely not a resting pose, Billy will remind you: "This whole yoga thing is supposed to make you happy,  so get happy people." In short, this class will make you sweat, meditate and giggle – a well-rounded practice for yogis of all levels.
