Hydrating our bodies seems to be one of the easiest things to forget, but the most important to remember.

You can see how remaining hydrated might become a problem for us hot yoga lovers. But how do you know if you’re dehydrated and how do you deal with it properly?

One of the first indicators of dehydration during a hot yoga session (or any higher temperature workout) is tiredness, feeling dizzy, muscle cramping and oddly enough, a lack of sweat. These are all signs that you’re dehydrated and lacking essential electrolytes.

We hear a lot about electrolytes, but few of us actually know what they are. Electrolytes are charged positive or negative molecules that become active in water. They are responsible for firing off signals throughout the body and regulate things like your heart rate, pH balance, muscle contraction and body fluid. In short, all of your organs rely on them.

Of course being dehydrated will affect your ability to perform physical activity, but it also affects your skin. Being that your skin is your largest organ, it makes sense that dehydration would have some wear and tear on that glowing complexion.

With that being said, I like to make myself a rejuvenating smoothie to keep my body full of nutrients, water and all of that good stuff. Great for post-yoga or any other physical activity, this smoothie will help you recharge, hydrate and it does wonders for your skin.

Rejuvenating Smoothie

  • 1 banana
  • 1/4 inch fresh ginger
  • 1/2 cup mango
  • 1 large orange
  • 1/4 cup water

Peel both your banana and ginger. Chop into small pieces so they will easily blend. Skin and slice your mango and add it to the blender. If you like pulp, peel and add orange. For pulp-free, freshly squeeze two oranges and add to blender. Add water and then blend all of your ingredients on high for 1-2 minutes. Pour into a glass and enjoy.
