Yes, in case you didn’t know, there is a USA Yoga Federation that wants to promote yoga as a sport. Before you get your mat in a knot, there are a few things you should consider first:

  • Yoga asana competitions have taken place in India, the birthplace of yoga, for hundreds of years.
  • In its mission statement, USA Yoga says that it wants to develop yoga into a sport to help support yoga athletes and inspire others to try yoga.
  • BKS Iyengar, the man who wrote the book on yoga, gave the organization his blessing.

Also, how cool would it be to see those who dedicate their lives to the practice of yoga display jaw-dropping poses? Find out more about the 2013 USA Yoga Asana Championship.

How I feel

Yoga competition what can I saw
Awh inspiring
And simply amazing!!!

Yoga Asana Chmpoinship sweeps

How do I feel about competition yoga? It would be amazing to watch. I would learn so much. That said it seems like the beauty and passion for yoga comes from the daily practice and the spirituality of yoga. It may just dampen the purpose of part of it. How amazing though to do such intense work. So much focus and discipline would have to go into a competitive venue.
Personally, I get lost in the energetic field that yoga creates. It is where I am able to let go the most. Whenever someone in my family comes into the room, I feel the tension in my body more. I am less able to let go when others are watching. It would take a great meditative state during a competition to achieve that kind of energetic looseness. I'm not saying it couldn't be done. I am sure it could. A very experienced yogi could. A great spiritual teacher could. I am neither so it is astounding for me to contemplate. I ramble, thanks ;-)

Yoga Competition in NYC

Would love to see this. I just reunited with yoga this past year, and can't believe I ever left it. "When the student is ready, the teacher appears."

Thanks for the entry.
