Top 5 Ayurveda tools for fall (Vata Season)

New to Ayurveda or just looking for easy ways to stay healthy and happy this fall? alignyo asked Ayurveda expert Ali Cramer of Laughing Lotus NYC to share her top five tools for Vata season. These simple and easy Ayurvedic practices will help boost your health this fall. 

It’s easy to assemble your Ayurvedic toolkit for Vata Season (fall and early winter). Ayurveda has a few super simple practices for your daily routine to keep you feeling healthy and balanced through these colder, drier months. To get started, you’ll just need a few items, which can easily be purchased at Whole Foods, on Amazon or at your local health food store.

Tongue Scraper

Once you start using a tongue scraper, you will wonder how you ever got along without it. Scrape your tongue thoroughly when you wake up to remove bacteria and toxins and help freshen breath. I also like to do it at night before bed or anytime my hummus is extra garlicky. 

Neti Pot

Invest in a neti pot made of ceramic, not plastic. To use it, fill three-fourths full of room temperature water and add a pinch of sea salt. Standing over a sink, tip your head forward, then lift one side up and place spout in one nostril. Let the water flow through for a bit, then change sides. It may feel awkward at first, but you'll get the hang of it. Use your neti pot a couple times a week (no need to do it everyday) to help keep sinuses clear and keep colds away. 


The Ayurvedic herb Triphala can be found in either pill or powder form. Triphala is great for immunity, helps internal cleansing and has a very mild non-addictive laxative property. I like the powder, but the taste can be a lot for some. If you get the pills, follow the instructions on bottle and take them every day. If you want to try Triphala powder, take half a teaspoon in warm water before bed every night. [Ed. note: We love this Mockingbird Meadows Triphala Honey Spread.]

Sesame oil

Vata season is dry and windy, which can pull moisture from your skin. Sesame oil is unctuous and heavy, perfect for moisturizing and protecting during this time. You don't have to get a fancy massage oil, just get some organic cold-pressed sesame oil from the supermarket. If your skin has a tendency to be oily, rub it all over before your shower. If you have dry skin, apply it after your shower (check out how to give yourself an Ayurvedic Abhyanga massage here). 

You can also cook with sesame oil. For Vata season, cut way back on raw veggies, and instead roast or stir-fry with some good sesame oil to nourish your body from the inside out. 

Book it

For those of you a bit newer to Ayurveda, a great first book is A Life of Balance, written by one of my teachers, Maya Tiwari. It breaks down a lot of the Ayurvedic theory very clearly and has great recipes by season. Get in the kitchen and test out some of the recipes and make some nourishment for yourself. Don’t forget to invite a couple friends over to share—it’s one of the best practices there is.
