After my days at lululemon, I can’t help but get excited about the latest in the ‘athleisure’ wear trend, a retail category making up 17% of all retail sales last year. It combines athletic apparel and leisurewear, think yoga pants meets a cute cotton t-shirt on top. Sitting in the billion dollar sales territory, it’s a pretty BIG trend to keep an eye out for. I love watching what’s coming next and was excited and frankly a little surprised that the latest cutting edge line comes from Athleta. Traditionally seen as a conservative brand (parent company being the Gap) and more middle of the road on the fashion side, Athleta just launched its collaboration with designer, Derek Lam. Some of the standouts were the leather shorts, big and bold graphic designs and we’ll say a ‘modernist’ color palette. Prices ranges from $68 - $98 for tanks and leggings and $228-$495 for leathers. We’ll keep on eye on how it does with the mall demographic and suburbanites, which is where Athleta has most of its retail stores.  My personal favorite are the leather shorts. I’m just not sure how they’ll function in my spin class. Thoughts – we would love to hear ‘em.
