Yoga for Couples: Partner Baddha Konasana
Partner Baddha Konasana

Sit back-to-back with your partner, with the soles of your feet together, and your knees apart, in the yoga position known as cobbler’s pose or bound angle. Close your eyes and feel your back pressed up against your partner’s back (one of you can sit up on a cushion if there is a big height discrepancy). See if you can begin to synchronize your breath with that of your partner, inhaling together through the nose, and exhaling together through the nose. Even though you are not facing one another, this pose can be very intimate, as you are lining up your central energy channels, along which the chakras are located.

Lover's Twist

Stay in the previous position and twist to the right - you can place your right hand on your partner’s left knee and use that leverage to deepen your twist.

Lover's Stretch

Still in this back-to-back position, one of you will begin to gently fold forward, as the partner begins to lay back facilitating the forward bend of the other person. This will require silent communication, as the person folding forward will likely be coming up against some resistance in their hips and inner thighs. Allow the weight of your partner’s body up against you to gently ease you down, opening further with each breath.

Lover's Straddle

Now turn and face each other, in a wide-seated straddle position. Touch your feet against each other, and sit up with a long spine. Reach out and hold hands with your partner. Keep your eyes open and begin to gaze into your partner’s eyes. Again, you might work with synchronizing your breath with that of your partner, but this time, try exhaling as he/she inhales and inhaling while he/she exhales, all the while keeping your gaze into each other’s eyes. Feel the energy exchange that takes place, and the intimacy of simply looking your partner in the eye for several minutes.

Double Downdog

This is a fun one to just play. Have your partner do downward facing dog. Stand in front of your partner’s hands, facing AWAY from your partner (you are both facing forward). Do a forward bend and place you hands just a foot or so in front of your partner’s hands. From there, place one foot and then the other on your partner’s sacrum (the area between the buttocks and the lower back), and begin to straighten both legs so that you are in an L-shape (90-degree handstand). Breathe together, or simply laugh!

Partner Savasana

One of you lies in final relaxation, on your back. The partner, starting at the head and working down to the feet, can give a massage to the neck, the hands, and then the legs and feet, using some delicious smelling essential oils. Take turns giving and receiving massage.

Enjoy!
