5 yoga poses for energy

Yoga for energy: Cat Pose
Start with Cat/Cow Pose

Nothing get the kinks out first thing in the morning like a round of delicious cat/cow stretches. On hands and knees, inhale and arch your spine, lift your face, and look up; as you exhale, round your back, tuck your tailbone, hollow your belly and release your chin towards your chest. Repeat at least 5 times, synchronizing your breath with your movement.

A few rounds of cat and cow pose helps wake your body up so you can get ready to move through your day.

Morning yoga for energy: Downward Facing Dog
Down Dog

From your hands and knees, begin to lift your hips high in the air, straightening your legs and pressing your thigh bones back into your hamstrings for downdog. Hold this pose for at least five breaths. Feel free to bend one knee and straighten the other, circle the hips and peddle your legs to help wake up your body.

Extended Side Angle

From downward dog, step your right foot forward in between your hands and plant your back heel down, turning the back foot slightly in (10-15 degrees). Come up to Warrior 2, and then drop your right arm down on the outside of your right foot (put that hand on a block if it does not reach the floor). Extend your top arm straight up and then over your head. Stay up to one minute and then step back to downward dog and repeat on the second side.

Morning yoga for energy: Cobra Pose
Cobra Pose

From downward dog, inhale to plank pose, and then lower yourself down to your belly. Place your hands in line with your chest and begin to drag the floor isometrically towards you with your hands as you begin to slide your chest forward and up into cobra pose. Stay low at first and feel all of the muscles of the back engaging to lift you. If you are able to continue dragging the floor towards you (instead of pushing it away) to come up higher, go for it! Stay up to one minute, and then lower to your belly and press back to downward facing dog.

Morning yoga for energy: Wheel Pose
Wheel Pose

From downward dog, step or hop your feet through your hands and lie down on your back. Bend your knees and put your feet on the floor close to your buttocks, about hips distance apart. Press your hips up into bridge pose and pause here. Then place your hands alongside your ears and press down through your hands and feet to come up to the top of your head. Pause again, plug your arms into their sockets by drawing energy from your elbow points to your shoulders, and then on a strong inhalation, press down your hands and feet and rise up to wheel pose. Breathe smoothly and deeply at least 5-8 breaths and then slowly bend the arms to come down.

Draw the knees loosely into the chest. The roll to your right side and come up to a meditative seat. Sit for just a moment and contemplate the day ahead of you. What does it look like? How will you create it? Step into that reality and embrace it! Good morning! It’s a brand new day!
