Hot off the mat

Your yoga doesn’t stop once you roll up the mat, and neither does the flow of noteworthy yoga news. From parental outrage over kids doing yoga in school to naked yoga classes just for men, here’s the latest news that’s hot off the mat.

What’s hotter than a Bikram class? This week’s yoga headlines:

For the boys

New York teacher Joschi Schwarz re-opens his Chelsea studio this week as Le Male Yoga, a place where New York's male yogis can really hang out. Le Male, the first male-only yoga studio in Manhattan, will offer weekly Nak’d Flow classes for students who want to shed inhibitions and really see how they look in a pose.

Yoga for kids? Not in this town.

Free yoga classes for young students sounds like a step in the right direction for us, but one California school district is being met with resistance to a new yoga program provided by a grant from the Jois Foundation. The problem? Some parents don’t want their children indoctrinated by the religion of yoga.

Detroit’s yoga debt

Facials, mani/pedis and private yoga lessons—former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick knows how to pamper like a pro. We just wish he didn’t use city funds to do so. Kilpatrick, who’s on trial for a laundry list of stereotypical bad politician corruption charges, is accused of using nearly $4000 in nonprofit funds for private yoga lessons.
