A new study from researchers at the University of Michigan, published in the journal Gastroenterology, shows that stress can do terrible things to your gastrointestinal system by causing inflammation, thus leading to stomach pain, diarrhea and worsening preexisting conditions. Stress does this by reducing inflammasomes, multiprotein complexes that help your body’s immune system function properly and respond to inflammation. Basically, without ‘em, you’re going to feel terrible.

When the researchers gave mice in the experiment probiotics — live bacteria that help your digestive system – however, the stress stopped reducing their inflammasomes, seemingly reversing the effects.
