Get into the 4th of July spirit with this red, white and blue Cherry Blueberry Powerhouse Smoothie recipe. This vegan, soy-free and gluten-free smoothie has no added sugars and will help you stay energized all morning long.

If you’ve taken a walk to the farmers’ market lately, you’ve noticed that it is officially cherry season. Not only are cherries delicious, and associated with many traditional American desserts, they boast an incredible list of health benefits. Loaded with an antioxidant called anthocyanin, cherries are shown to aid in combating diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. They are also considered a “brain food,” aiding in the prevention of dementia and memory loss. Got insomnia? Cherries are a natural source of melatonin. Have a handful of tart ones for dessert.

In addition to all that, their powerful anti-inflammatory benefits make them a great post-workout recovery food, loaded with fiber, iron, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and E. Combined with the anti-oxidant powers of blueberries, the protein of raw cashews, the omega-3 fatty acids in chia seeds, and the calcium to prevent osteoporosis in raw carob, this smoothie is hearty enough to keep you going post-yoga, and light enough to help you maintain that post yoga-high (the anthocyanin in cherries is also great for skin, so this will help maintain your yogi glow.)

Cherry Blueberry Powerhouse Smoothie

serves one

  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
  • ¾ cup frozen dark sweet cherries
  • ½ cup frozen blueberries
  • ½ frozen banana
  • 3 Tbsp. raw cashews
  • 1 Tbsp. chia seeds
  • 1 Tbsp. raw cacoa/carob powder

Optional toppings:

  • 1-2 Tbsp. raw, unsweetened cacao nibs
  • 1-2 Tbsp. goji berries

Place all ingredients up to raw cacoa powder into blender, and blend until smooth. Depending on your blender, about 2-3 minutes.Top with cacao nibs and goji berries, and ENJOY!
