Ch-ch-ch-chia (seeds)

General

Trader Joe's Chia Seeds are flying off the shelves. Why, you ask? These seeds du jour are chock full of omega 3's, which can help lift your mood and increase your energy. To boot, chia seeds are full of protein and fiber, and can suppress your appetite. We like them on yogurt with fresh fruit, in smoothies, or in a breakfast bowl – each make for a great pre-or post-yoga snack.

Juicy news

General by Allison Richard

Too busy to eat? Nonsense. When that post-practice hunger hits and we're pressed for time, we opt for juices and smoothies from one of the eight Manhattan locations of Juice Generation. Reflection’s yoga instructor, Joanne Silver, likes the seemingly decadent Peanut Butter Split, which packs a protein punch from the peanut butter and electrolytes from the banana.

Lorna Jana stretches all the way from Australia to California

What’s Hot by Amy Gartenberg

Sometimes a fresh pair of yoga pants or a new moisture-wicking tank is all we need to be inspired to work up a sweat, so we’re always happy to discover another stylish, fitness apparel company.

The newest kid on the block is Lorna Jane. Huge in Australia, Lorna Jane has made its way to the US with a few stores in California and plans to expand to other areas soon.

Besides the functional and fashionable looks, we love their recycling program: bring in your old workout clothes to donate and receive a discount on your purchase. Now that's smart living.

Om finds a new home

Local Events by Allison Richard

When OM yoga Center closed its doors, it sent ripples throughout the yoga community and the students weren’t the only ones looking for a new home.

Long-time OM Yoga Center teachers Brian Liem, Joe Miller, Frank Mauro and Edward Jones took the opportunity to think outside the box and came up with the concept of Now: Yoga.

Their new home is the Shala House (across the street from now closed, OM) and the new name reflects the first two words of the Yoga Sutras.

Got curls?

Local Events by Allison Richard

We’ve heard of yoga classes for tots and those specifically designed for the stiff guy, but a class for those with curly tresses?

While it may sound superficial (there are poses to help hair follicles), the goal behind the specialized workshop, Yoga to the Curvy Curly, which debuted on Sept. 15 at Fort Greene Park, is anything but.

The Best Ways to Complement Your Practice

What’s Hot by Katie Librie

Telling your yoga practice it’s beautiful is one way to compliment it. But for a more effective way to enhance your practice, try these cross training workouts to get your body balanced, toned and flexible off the mat:

What's that smell?

General by Katie Librie

After a 90-minute sweatfest in a power vinyasa class, the only thing more refreshing than that first cool breeze when the teacher cracks the studio door open might be the energizing smell of peppermint oil or soothing whiff of lavender musk when you close your eyes in Savasana.

Some teachers release just enough of a scent at the end of class to let it settle in the air and indulge our senses while others treat students to a temple or head massage.

Whichever you experience, the scents from essential oils have the power to energize and uplift or calm and de-stress.

The Facts of Yoga

General by Molly Nourmand

Yesterday when we were taking class with Peter Barnett at Black Dog Yoga, we picked up a copy of Whole Life Times on the way out. While flipping through it, we read that 20% of U.S. yoga practitioners live on the West Coast. Surprising or not surprising?
